29.06.2008 - The eastern tower reopened
The eastern tower will be opened again to tourists on July 1st after having been closed for more than one year when the roof was completely destroyed by hurricane Kyrill in January 2007. We are pleased to announce that we have decided to include this tower in a new tour which will also take you into the southern gallery of the castle.
The eastern tower will be entered through a former working gate which was used during the construction of the tower in the fourteenth century. Inside the tower you will see photographs portraying all of the roofs that used to cover the eastern tower in the past. There is a model of the castle demonstrating how it looked in the fourteenth century. There are pictures documenting the decay of the roof, pictures of the construction of a new roof in the late 1930s, as well as pictures after the hurricane in January 2007 and the re-creation of the roof in Autumn 2007.
On the fifth floor you will enjoy wonderful views of the Šumava mountains and you will be able to see the frame of the roof and the roofage from inside the tower.
The tour continues to the palace and further on to the cellar of the burgarve’s residence where you will see historical documentation and other interesting things related to Kašperk castle.
Therefore, the new tour route offers a unique view from inside the new roof of the eastern tower, takes you into places which have never been opened to tourists and provides you with pictures taken during the construction of the new roof.
